But, in а соuntry where 90 рerсent оf wоmen аged between 18 аnd 39 reроrted hаving been hаrаssed in 2019, оthers were suрроrtive.

Meаnwhile, Egyрt’s eduсаtiоn ministry in Dаkаhliа regiоn – nоrtheаst оf Саirо – referred the teасher tо а disсiрlinаry соmmittee, where she wаs sасked frоm her jоb in the сity оf Mаnsоurа. Аmid а subsequent оutсry, she wаs reinstаted this week.

Uganda: Government Proposes To Make Burial Ceremonies For Weekends Only

A strong heated debate has loomed in Uganda after the Ministry of Public Service made a point that Ugandans spend more time mourning than working which is affecting the public sector the most.
As different African countries respect different mourning customs, they almost share the same patterns.

In Uganda, the extended family and close friends converge at the house of the deceased for a period of four days. During these customary days and nights, the relatives bring food from their houses to help around with. They believe that the body of the deceased must spend at least one night at home. This is also common in countries like Zimbabwe.

After burial, close relatives spend the remaining days with a fire lit in the yard. This they do as a traditional law to sweep away the spirit of the deceased. On the last day, they do remembrance celebrations honoring the good things about the life of the deceased. Close relatives might again spend up to five days giving company to the bereaved family.

The call by the Ugandan Ministry of Public Service has been made from an economic point of view with a reasonable stance in the sense that duties, businesses and productive activities should not be interrupted which means more productivity.

However, this will draw high cost of maintaining the corpses for instance in the case that a person dies on a Sunday night. As a matter of fact, the government will be forced to introduce low cost mortuary services if not free.

Arguments from social, cultural, religious and economic lines have also been brought up with the biggest cry from that of religious discrimination. The major concern being that would Muslims have to wait till its Saturday whilst they believe in early burials. Others being from those that believe in Sunday being the first day of the week.

Different arguments continue to come through as this is still being discussed and thought over by members of the public. Countries like Kenya have adopted the practice which is believed to be an Eastern idea. If the proposed notion is in motion, how would Ugandans react, will more African countries change their cultures as well? Follow up for more on this big debate…
